
The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) is seeking an Editorial Manager to lead its editorial desk and sustain its efforts in doing impactful investigative reporting. This role is central to shaping PCIJ’s editorial agenda, driving the production of data-driven investigations and multimedia content, and ensuring rigorous standards across story projects and fellowships.
Working closely with the Executive Director and PCIJ’s training desk, the Editorial Manager will play a key role in coordinating across teams, mentoring journalists and fellows, and fostering synergies that advance PCIJ’s mission of promoting accountability, transparency, and press freedom.
About the Role
The Editorial Manager will be responsible for leading PCIJ’s editorial desk and supporting the Executive Director in coordinating story projects and synergizing across teams. This role is central to ensuring the smooth execution of investigative projects, data stories, and multimedia productions of the organization. The Editorial Manager will help shape PCIJ’s editorial agenda by developing story ideas, managing data-driven investigations, and fostering synergies between the editorial desk and training programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage investigative story projects from conception to publication, tracking timelines, deliverables, and quality standards.
- Lead and support the development of data-driven stories, ensuring methodological rigor, effective visualization, and impactful presentation of findings.
- Coordinate the editorial team’s daily workflow, ensuring smooth communication between editors, reporters, fellows, and contributors.
- Manage the editorial side of PCIJ’s fellowship programs, including mentoring and support for fellows throughout their investigative projects.
- Provide editorial guidance and rigorous editing of drafts, strengthening the clarity, accuracy, and impact of investigative stories.
- Manage production of multimedia content, social media strategy, and impact planning efforts around PCIJ’s reports and content outputs.
- Oversee research projects, coordinating with internal and external partners to produce evidence-based outputs that match PCIJ’s editorial and research agenda.
- Support the Executive Director in coordinating across editorial, training, and operations teams, ensuring organizational priorities are aligned and resources are effectively utilized.
- Collaborate with PCIJ’s training desk to identify synergies between editorial and capacity-building initiatives, integrating training outputs into editorial projects and vice versa.
- Build and maintain partnerships with external collaborators, networks, and institutions to expand PCIJ’s editorial reach and strengthen its impact.
- Contribute to donor-facing documentation and reports that highlight editorial achievements and the impact of PCIJ’s investigative work.
Qualifications
- Strong background in journalism, with required experience in investigative reporting and preferably with experience in editorial management or data journalism.
- Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and support journalists at different career stages.
- Experience managing story projects, fellowships, or editorial programs.
- Familiarity with data-driven reporting and research methodologies is an advantage.
- Commitment to PCIJ’s mission of promoting accountability, transparency, and press freedom.
Terms of Engagement
- The Editorial Manager will report directly to the Executive Director.
- Salary will be commensurate with skills and qualifications and will be discussed with shortlisted candidates during interviews.
- This is an initial one-year contract, subject to renewal based on performance and organizational needs.
