Two investigative series by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) were named finalists in the 2025 Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) Awards, a prestigious journalism competition in the region.
The awards recognize excellence in editorial work across Asia and aim to promote freedom of the press and the highest standards of journalism.
PCIJ’s collaboration with the Pulitzer Center to investigate the opaque algorithm of Grab transport company,” published on July 12, 2024, is nominated in the Excellence in Technology Reporting category.
The series was led by PCIJ editor-at-large Karol Ilagan.
Looking at the cost of convenience, the series examines the mechanics of ride-hailing fares and their impact on consumers. The story revealed how the widely used Grab app in the Philippines relies on an algorithm that lacks transparency, leading to unpredictable fare hikes that have frustrated many passengers.
The report highlighted concerns over algorithmic pricing, transparency, and consumer protection, raising critical questions about the balance between convenience and fairness in the digital economy.
The PCIJ series on political dynasties in the Philippines, which started in October 2024, is also nominated under the Excellence in Explanatory Reporting category.
The series, which renewed attention on political dynasties in the Philippines, began with the report “Meet the obese political dynasties of the Philippines.” It was published on October 25, 2024.
The series dives into the entrenched power of political clans that dominate local and national elections, challenging democratic representation and accountability. The series ran multiple pieces that map the scale and influence of these dynasties, offering an in-depth look at one of the country’s most persistent political issues.
The series was led by PCIJ Executive Director Carmela Fonbuena. The editorial and research team includes resident editor TJ Burgonio, staff Guinevere Latoza and Aaron John Baluis, and interns Angela Ballerda, Maujeri Ann Miranda, Leanne Louise Isip, Jaime Alfonso Cabanilla, Nyah Genelle De Leon, Luis Lagman, Jorene Luouise Tubesa, Joss Gabriel Oliveros, and John Gabriel Yanzon. PCIJ Resident artist Joseph Luigi Almuena produced the illustrations.
The series on political dynasties is ongoing, supported by PCIJ fellows and interns, with a focus on various regions and provinces.
