(UPDATED) President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Abdulraof Macaua as the new chief minister of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority and replaced 21 other members with new ones.

The BTA is the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao’s (BARMM’s) interim government.

A total of 58 of the 80-member parliament were initially retained, including Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Chairman Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim who was replaced by Macacua. The former held the post since the BARMM’s creation in 2019.

Macacua took his oath of office before the president on March 12. Other members took their oath before the new chief minister in Manila three days after, with Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez in attendance.

New members participated in another oath-taking ceremony on March 24 in Malacañang, this time with Marcos presiding over the event. That same day, Ebrahim announced that he declined his seat as a BTA member.

Below is the list of new BTA members. The Bangsamoro Information Office told the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism “there are only 79 on the list instead of 80” as of March 25.

They added that “it is possible” for one more member to be appointed to fill in all 80 seats.

*The Bangsamoro Government did not specify which group they belong to.

BARMM is a product of a 2014 peace deal between the government and the MILF, the former rebel group that vowed to end its secession bid in exchange for autonomous governance in the region.

The Bangsamoro charter states that the interim government must be MILF-led and the power to appoint its members rests on the president. This means that at least 41 of the 80-member BTA must come from the group.

But the MILF claims that with the current setup, only 35 out of the 41 they formally endorsed were appointed by Marcos.
