On the 35th year of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), the organization’s founding executive director, Sheila Coronel, urged Filipino journalists to pursue watchdog journalism.
“Our experiment with democracy has been fraught. It’s been a bumpy ride. The press is no longer as free nor as powerful, but that has not diminished our belief in the power of investigative journalism,” Coronel said in her message to the participants of the Third National Conference on Investigative Journalism.
“We need wathdog reporting now more than ever. We need to hold the powerful to account,” Coronel said.
Coronel delivered her remarks remotely from New York, where she serves as director of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism.
