The DENR has pushed cement plants to burn plastic municipal wastes as alternative fuel to help address the country’s solid waste problem. But critics are raising health concerns. They’re also urging the government to focus on requiring manufacturers to reduce plastic production instead.
In a roundtable discussion organized by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), election watchdogs identified several electoral reforms they would want the 19th Congress and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to address ahead of the 2025 midterm polls.
'Starting the reform effort as early as now is a good first step. But there has to be more discussions like this [among civil society groups] because what we really need is a strong consensus on what we want to push,' says former Comelec Commissioner Luie Tito Guia.
