DIGITAL media should facilitate the flow of ideas, says University of the Philippines film professor Tilman Baumgärtel. Yet there is a real danger that the exchange of ideas might become harder — even impossible — in the digital age.

Baumgärtel says “restrictive” copyright and anti-piracy laws tend to favor First World countries, in the process preventing artists from appropriating previous work for new creations.

Baumgärtel organized Asian Edition, a conference on media piracy and intellectual property in the Philippines, in order to address some of these issues. The conference was held last Friday.

Panelists included UP law professor JJ Disini, who says that while it is not illegal to buy pirated goods, it is against the law to reproduce and distribute these.

Listen to Baumgärtel as he points out the connection between Don Mariano Guevarra, the pioneer of the Marikina shoe industry, and media piracy.

unfortunately, i was only able to record baumgartel’s and disini’s lectures. you could try asking the UP Film dept. if they have footage of the other lectures.
